Attending a Young Composer Concert from an Outsider's Perspective
As an administrator at Musica Academy, I get to see students in their weekly lessons—working through challenges, celebrating small victories—but there’s something truly special about seeing their hard work come to life on stage. The Winter/JOC event, held on February 9 at St. John’s Music, was one of those moments. It wasn’t just another recital; it was a celebration of creativity, where young composers could perform their music in front of a live audience.
More Than Just a Performance—A Milestone in Creativity
Unlike traditional recitals, where students perform well-known pieces, this event allowed them to share something original. Some young composers, ages 6 -16, wrote and performed their works across different instruments, including piano and voice. A highlight of the afternoon was an exceptional guest performance by our new guitar teacher, Mr. Juan, who added to the excitement with his incredible playing.
It was inspiring to watch each student step onto the stage with confidence, knowing they were about to share something they created from scratch. The audience's response—warm, encouraging, and full of admiration—made the moment even more magical. Having a chance to play on a top C-series Grand piano was also a treat for the students.
A Celebration of Achievement
Every student walked away with a certificate from Yamaha Canada and Musica Academy, a symbol of the hard work and dedication they put into their compositions. Seeing their proud smiles as they held up their certificates reminded me why events like these are so important. It’s not just about playing music—it’s about building confidence, embracing creativity, and celebrating progress.
An Administrator’s Perspective
This event was a rare experience for me. I usually see students in the context of their lessons, but watching them share their original works gave me a whole new perspective. It reminded me just how powerful music can be—not just as an art form but as a way for young musicians to express themselves in ways words cannot. I do not doubt that this is just the beginning for these incredible young composers, and I can’t wait to see what they create next!
