How Music Can Bring Joy to Seniors: Empower your students! Students have the ‘Super-power’ to bring JOY to others with music!

Rekindling the Joy of Music: A December to Remember for Piano Students

As a piano teacher, I find that by the time December comes around, on top of the weekly lessons and the daily practising grind, sometimes our students lose touch with why they are learning piano and wonder why they have to go through with the tiresome daily practices. During these moments, I try to remind them of the bigger picture: the incredible opportunity to share the gift of music with others.

The Biggest Picture: Sharing Music with Others as a SuperPower

I always strive to influence students and give them the bigger picture. If they have perfected a skill or a song, they can be a positive influence on others. I like to say, ‘Show your Super Power! And Play for others. '

A Memorable Performance at a Local Senior Residence

On December 7th, 2024, we brought 14 students to a local senior residence and had a mini Christmas Cheer performance. As the volunteers pushed the wheelchairs of some of the residents into the main hall, you could feel the excitement and anticipation of the event. Rows and rows of wheelchaired residents and their family members filled the hall, and we had to keep adding seats.

Students played some Christmas tunes, some Beethoven and Schumann, on the Clarinet, Piano, and Violin. A voice student even sang “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra.

Shared  Experience Of A Moment Of Joy

We ended with a Sing-A-Long to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank Sinatra. The audience enjoyed singing along and shaking their bells and tambourine to the beat. We posed for a group photo, and two lucky students’ names were picked to win a box of Gingerbread House Decorating kit.

The Lesson: Even Simple Songs Can Make a Difference

Through this activity, I hope students see that their performance ( their ‘Super Power;) brought ample joy to others. Their weekly practices, aiming for the perfection of that one song, do make a difference in someone else’s life for a few minutes. Many senior residents approached the students and staff to thank us for playing there. We hoped that we helped bring some holiday cheer to the audience. The students of Musica Academy wish everyone a wonderful holiday season.

The students of Musica Academy have shown that music truly is a superpower, capable of bringing smiles and warmth to others. As we close this year, we wish everyone a wonderful holiday season filled with music, joy, and love.
